Commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the Holocaust – "Unforgotten Neighbours"

At 10 o'clock the bells of the Catholic church rang out, expressing solidarity and respect for the memorial gathering at the Jewish cemetery in Namestovo.
A minute of music and a minute of silence for all those who are no longer alive...

On 9 September, a memorial gathering was held at the Jewish cemetery in Namestovo to mark the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust.
In Slovakia, 9 September is the Memorial Day of the Victims of the Holocaust and of Racial Violence. It refers to a specific event – the adoption of the so-called Jewish Code (Regulation on the Legal Status of Jews No. 198/1941 Sl. z.) by the government of the wartime Slovak Republic on 9 September 1941, exactly 80 years earlier.

The names of the deported were read aloud – one candle lit for every ten names – followed by the names of the Righteous and those like them.

A violin duo performed by Ľubomíra Puchelová and Adrián Maľovaník completed the atmosphere of the commemoration.

The commemoration was organised by the civic association Pamätaj together with the Anton Bernolák Grammar School as co-organiser, as part of a Slovakia-wide event organised by Mr and Mrs Klem.
