Digital Memory Landscape of the Jewish Community of Orava

We are preparing a comprehensive digitalization of the Jewish cemetery – its transformation into a digital memory landscape, "from stones to stories". Every gravestone will be documented, the Hebrew inscriptions expertly transcribed and translated into Slovak and English, and connected to a database of the buried and the stories of their families. The project will create an interactive map showing the cemetery's historical boundary from before the construction of the Orava dam, 3D models of selected gravestones, a digital visitor guide with QR codes on site, and educational materials for schools. You can already explore the first part of the digitalization in the Digital Cemetery section.

A Pier over the Flooded Part of the Cemetery

We are preparing a wooden pier extending over the surface of the Orava reservoir. The pier will symbolically commemorate the part of the cemetery that remained under water after the reservoir was filled in 1953 – visitors will be able to walk above the places where the cemetery once continued. The working design (March 2026) is by the architects Danica Hollá and Ľubomír Hollý.
